São Miguel is NOT a tropical island.
While the weather is mild and the scenery is lush, please don't go to the island expecting something akin to the Caribbean. The Azores are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, with the Gulf Stream passing very near. All this leads to a lot of condensation and unpredictable weather patterns. The weather for São Miguel can be sunny, rainy, cold, and warm, all in one day. This leads to the next item:
Pack a rain jacket and waterproof hiking shoes.
It will most likely rain during your trip, so you won't regret keeping a light rain jacket with you at all times. The best part of São Miguel is its spectacular views, some of which you can only get to via hiking. If you want to avoid lugging heavy hiking boots around, shoes with grip on the bottom should work fine. Rent a car if you're confident driving up steep hills.
Unfortunately, the best way to get around the island is with a car. You should get your own ride if you're invested in getting to primo viewing spots at the best times. Relying on a tour bus can mean unwanted delays, and you'll have to go on their schedule. Finding an automatic transmission car to rent is not impossible, but it is a bit hard on the island. That said, unless you're experienced with manual, you should avoid renting due to the steep hills and narrow roads.
Make sure you have enough cash (Euros, Euros, baby!)
Most places on the island do not accept credit and debit cards. You can exchange currency at the airport when you land, and there's a convenient money exchange store on the main strip in Ponta Delgada.
Try to get to viewing spots early.
Like any good thing, you'll have to work for those scenic views around the island. Everyone wants to see them, and they get crowded fast. Beat the tour buses and leave as early as you can.
Swim in the thermal pools when it rains.
This is something the locals recommend, and it is sound advice. Nothing beats swimming in warm water with cold rain coming down on you. Just try it.
Don't wear valuable jewelry or expensive clothes in the thermal pools.
The minerals in the water can discolor your swim clothes and your gold and silver jewelry.
Smoking (cigarettes) is allowed all over the island.
It's Europe, baby. Around the stores, all over the sidewalk, you either put up with it or maybe decide São Miguel isn't the right place for you.
Arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure.
The airport is small. You'll have to wait in extremely long lines before boarding. Try to get there at least three hours early so you don't miss your flight.
Best things to do in São Miguel
• Walk from the top of the crater at Sete Cidades to the bottom. This takes about two-three hours and includes some absolutely breathtaking views. I recommend parking at the top and, when you reach the bottom, getting a taxi back up to the top. You can hike back up, but the terrain can be difficult in some spots.
• Visit the botanical garden in Ponta Delgada called the Jardim Botânico António Borges. It's lovely. Make sure to stop by the garden's cafe, Jardim Natural Food, and coffee for lunch or a small pick-me-up.
• Explore downtown Ponta Delgado. It's so charming; it seems unreal. There are many beautiful churches and buildings to admire and even a palace!
• Visit Terra Nostra Park. You won't be disappointed. You can swim in the thermal pool for a small fee or wander around the extensive grounds and feel as if you're in paradise.
• Drink in some history and delicious tea at the Formosa Tea Factory. The factory is a tea museum with beautiful views of Porto Formoso.
