What you need to know before you visit Bend
Here are a few things I wish I knew before I visited Bend the first time:
If you’re planning on renting water toys, book well in advance. Places like Central Oregon Rentals sell out FAST. I recommend booking at least a month or two in advance if you intend to visit in the summer.
You’ll need to reserve tickets to the lava river cave well in advance. The caves are open from mid-May to September. I wasn’t able to get tickets three days in advance in August. You can book your tickets here.
Most tour companies don’t allow booking within 48 hours of the reservation, so don’t be afraid to call last minute to see if they have any openings.
Summer is crowded. I’ve heard from locals that Bend gets a lot of out-of-state visitors (especially from Northern California), so you might want to consider visiting during the shoulder months.
Consider staying at the SunRiver Resort if you’re traveling with kids.The resort has an amazing aquatics park that’s only available to guests.
See what’s playing at the Hayden Amphitheater before you go. Visiting the amphitheater is an experience in itself. You can bring a picnic blanket and lawn chairs and just chill as you watch a great performance. It’s the quintessential Bend experience.
If you’re not an outdoorsy person, you might not have enough to do. There are plenty of good breweries and restaurants to visit, but actual indoor activities are sparse.
